The next five years will be an exciting time for gravitational-wave physics: We expect the first direct detections of gravitational waves with Advanced LIGO and Virgo. Even more exciting is the prospect of observing the same event in both gravitational-wave and electromagnetic channels simultaneously. In this talk, I’ll review past efforts to make such joint detections a reality as well as recent results from a large-scale simulation campaign aimed at setting expectations for electromagnetic follow-up of binary neutron stars during the first two years of Advanced LIGO and Virgo.
