All UWM employees are required by UW System policy to receive training on three topics:
- Sexual Harassment
(Title IX)
- Information Security Awareness
(Securing Data and Information Technology)
- Mandated Reporter
(Executive Order #54, Reporting of Child Abuse and Neglect)
Training Notification
All UWM employees, including student employees, will receive emails from UW-Shared Services notifying them of the mandatory training requirements. The UW-Shared Services email will come from the email address: serviceoperations@uwss.wisconsin.edu. Employees will also receive a reminder email prior to the due date of course completion.
Completion Deadline
The deadline for completing the training courses is 30 days after the date that the training is assigned in Canvas.
Please Note for Salary Increases
Completion of the UW System mandated trainings, within the allotted time frame, is a requirement to be eligible for salary increases, including those as part of a State of Wisconsin Pay Plan.
Accessing the Trainings
The mandatory employee trainings are administered on a learning management system called Canvas, which is accessed through my.wisconsin.edu.
Please log into my.wisconsin.edu, browse the apps, and launch the Mandatory Training app to begin the mandatory trainings.

FAQ for Employees
What courses are included in the UW System Mandatory Employee Training Program?
The UW System Mandatory Employee Training Programs include Data Security, Title IX, and Mandated Reporter Training. Other training programs may occur outside of the UW System Mandatory Training programs.
When is the Mandatory Training Compliance assigned and due?
Mandatory Training is assigned to employees upon hire and every year on March 1. The following is the schedule for assignment and completion:
- Data Security – Completion required every year.
- Title IX – Completion required every three years.
- Mandated Reporter – Completion required once (generally completed after program implementation or upon hire for new employees).
Training completion will be due 30 days after the date assigned; the 30-day clock will begin the date the notification of assignment is made to the employee.
How will I be notified of Mandatory Training that is required?
Notification of assigned training will be sent via email from UW-Shared Services. The email will come from: serviceoperations@uwss.wisconsin.edu. An email will be sent upon assignment of training. In addition, reminders to complete will be sent 14 days prior to and 7 days prior to due date.

How do I enroll in an assigned course?
The mandatory employee trainings are accessed through my.wisconsin.edu
I already completed this training. Why do I have to do it again?
Mandatory Training is assigned to employees upon hire and every year on March 1. The following is the schedule for assignment and completion:

I missed the deadline to complete. Am I ineligible for pay plan increases?
Compliance with the mandatory training requirements is necessary to maintain eligibility for pay plan increases. Those who do not meet the mandatory training requirements will be ineligible for the next installation of pay plan. Future year pay plans will reassess the mandatory training requirement for compliance and eligibility.
How can I tell if I completed a course?
Please log into Canvas (https://uwm.edu/canvas/) and click the icon for Courses in the left sidebar. The Courses icon looks like a book.
Then click on the name of the mandatory training course to be taken to the course homepage. If you see the enroll in course button, you have not started the course.
On the course homepage, click on Grades, on the left side side of the screen, near the sidebar menu. In the upper right corner of the screen you will see your course grade along with a designation of complete or incomplete.
FAQ for Human Resources/Managers
Who is required to complete the mandatory trainings?
All employees must complete the mandatory training programs, including student hires. Exceptions to this are International and Advanced Opportunity Program Fellows. Waivers must be submitted for those who fall in this category.
How do I handle the training for a person who is on leave?
An employee who is currently on leave (based on HRS data) will not be assigned the training until they are returned from leave. For an employee who is assigned the training and subsequently goes on leave, their training assigning will need to be reset upon return from leave to reissue the training and the 30-day completion period.
Can training be waived?
In exceptional circumstances, the Title IX or Mandatory Reporter training can be waived for an employee. Waiver request for Title IX training can be directed to the Title IX Office at: titleix@uwm.edu.
Waiver request for Mandatory Reporter training can be directed to: hr-compliance@uwm.edu. Employees need to work with their HR Business Partner if a waiver is being requested.
How do I track employee course completion?
HR Business Partners can provide managers with reports to view course completion for employee in their units. Please see the Client Group Assignments for the HR Business Partner assigned to your unit or contact hr-compliance@uwm.edu for assistance.
