The Three Minute Thesis (3MT™) is an international research communication competition developed by the University of Queensland in 2008. The competition challenges doctoral students to present the significance of their research in just three minutes using a single static slide while communicating in language that is engaging and accessible to a non-specialist audience. More than a presentation competition, 3MT helps students strengthen their academic communication, public speaking, and storytelling skills—preparing them to share their research with colleagues, community members, policymakers, and other audiences beyond their disciplines. Today, 3MT is held at universities around the world, celebrating outstanding graduate research and the ability to communicate its impact clearly and effectively.
At UWM, the Graduate School will host an annual campus-wide 3MT competition that showcases the breadth and excellence of doctoral research across the university. Finalists receive professional development and presentation coaching as they prepare to compete for recognition, cash prizes, and the opportunity to represent UWM at the Midwest Association of Graduate Schools (MAGS) regional 3MT competition. Students interested in learning more are encouraged to attend the annual 3MT Information Session, where they can explore the competition format, eligibility requirements, and strategies for developing a successful presentation.
