On Campus Tuition

Tuition for on-campus courses is assessed according to a student’s residency status. Section 36.27 of the Wisconsin Statutes defines the qualifications for paying tuition at the resident rate.  For detailed information about residency for tuition purposes, please see the residency site for undergraduate admissions.

Graduate and undergraduate students are classified as resident or non-resident using the same law.

We use information on your application to determine your residency status when you are admitted to UWM as a graduate degree, non-degree, or certificate student. If you stop out of your studies for a year or more, your residency status will be re-evaluated when your re-entry application is processed.

Students who are non-residents for tuition purposes may qualify for a reduced non-resident rate if they are residents of Minnesota (the Minnesota Reciprocity tuition rate) or of the following states (the Midwest Tuition rate): Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, and South Dakota.

Students who are residents of Minnesota must apply for Reciprocity through State of Minnesota Office of Higher Education. Students whose permanent home addresses are in  the Midwest Tuition states listed above will be classified as qualifying for the Midwest Tuition rate.

You will be notified at the time of admission of your residency status. If you feel that you should be classified as a resident for tuition purpose but have not, please contact us at gs-residency-tuition@uwm.edu. You may request a reconsideration of your residency status if you qualify as a resident but did not provide enough information as part of your admission application.

There is an appeal process for non-resident status. Please contact our office for more information.

Online Tuition:

Students in an approved online program will be assessed tuition at the rates approved for their particular online programs. The tuition rates for the various online programs do not distinguish between Wisconsin residents and non-residents.
