On Campus Tuition:
Tuition for on-campus courses is assessed according to a student’s residency status. Section 36.27 of the Wisconsin Statutes defines the qualifications for paying tuition at the resident rate. For detailed information about residency for tuition purposes, please see the residency site for undergraduate admissions.
Graduate and undergraduate students are classified as resident or non-resident using the same law.
We use information on your application to determine your residency status when you are admitted to UWM as a graduate degree, non-degree, or certificate student. If you stop out of your studies for a year or more, your residency status will be re-evaluated when your re-entry application is processed.
You will be notified at the time of admission of your residency status.
Midwest Tuition Rate
UWM offers a special Non-Resident Midwest tuition rate, which is available to students who meet the criteria and are residents of Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio andSouth Dakota. Midwest Tuition applies to all on-campus associate, bachelor’s and graduate programs. Non-degree students are also eligible.
Students must be US citizens and have a permanent address listed in one of the participating states within the Non-Resident Midwest Tuition program.
Minnesota Reciprocity
The Minnesota-Wisconsin Tuition Reciprocity Agreement says that residents of Minnesota can attend Wisconsin institutions in approved programs and be assessed at the approved reciprocity tuition rate, plus segregated fees assessed for all students. Minnesota residents who wish to take advantage of the Minnesota-Wisconsin Tuition Reciprocity Agreement should apply for certification as a Minnesota resident at The Minnesota Office of Higher Education website.

Residency Reconsiderations
If you feel that you should be classified as a resident for tuition purpose but have not, please contact us at gs-residency-tuition@uwm.edu. You may request a reconsideration of your residency status if you qualify as a resident but did not provide enough information as part of your admission application.
You may request a reconsideration for a semester until the last day of classes for that term.
Residency Appeals
There is an appeal process for non-resident status, if we can’t make a determination based on your original information in your application or in the reconsideration form. The appeal process allows you to write a statement about your situation and discuss your case in front of a panel. Please contact our office for more information.
Online Tuition:
Students in an approved online program will be assessed tuition at the rates approved for their particular online programs. The tuition rates for the various online programs do not distinguish between Wisconsin residents and non-residents.
