Re-Charge STEM summer program 2025

We would like to thank all people involved that enabled us to offer ten young adults laboratory experiences and knowledge under the umbrella of the Re-Charge STEM Program at the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee. During the last eight weeks, our students learn aspects of chemical and biochemical laboratory safety and learn to use general laboratory equipment.

We are thankful to our graduate students Ethan Kowalczyk, Omolola Adedeji, Sharmin Shampa, and Collin Acheampong that were tasked to conduct daily hands-on and class room exercises. The new UWM chemistry building offered an outstanding laboratory infrastructure to support various aspects of the Re-Charge Stem program curriculum. Many laboratory sections were supervised by SAILARC Manager Anna Benko, who coordinated with several companies to integrate this program with the local industry. For instance, we had Metrohm teaching our students to use auto-titrators for water content and Actalent was working with our students to develop their resume and shared tips and trick for job interviews. Organic chemistry was another focus of the program. Students performed organic synthesis, analyzed their samples and used several strategies to purify their products. During the course of this section, students learn to handle harmful chemicals and understand the properties of organic compounds in addition to several analytical method for compound characterization. Some of the highlights of the program were site visits at MPP Group, Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewers District, Eurofins, Sterling Pharma Solutions, Microbial Discovery Group, and Millipore Sigma. We like to thank representatives of the companies for their time and dedication to education.

On the last day, companies interviewed our students to potentially fill open laboratory technician positions. Our students were very enthusiastic and showed great diligence and perseverance. We are looking forward to continue this program in 2026 with available funds from the Universities of Wisconsin. For 2027, we are looking for sponsors that will enable us to continue offering this program. Donate here.
