Instructor suspects academic misconduct and confers with the Dean of Students Office (DOSO) and Investigating Officer (IO) of the school/college in which the student is enrolled.
First Step
The instructor of record must offer the student a conference (DOCX) to discuss the allegations of academic misconduct. Students do not have to come to the conference, but must receive the offer.
Second Step
Once the conference has occured, or the deadline to schedule the conference has passed:
- The instructor determines Academic Misconduct has NOT occured:
- End of process. Inform DOSO and IO that the case will not be moving forward.
- The instructor determines Academic Misconduct HAS occured:
- Instructor (with advice of DOSO and IO) considers appropriate sanction. All allegations of Academic Misconduct must be documented with DOSO.
Appropriate Sanctions
- Group “A” Sanctions (UWS 14.05) Disciplinary sanction imposed at the discretion of the instructor
- An oral reprimand;
- A written reprimand presented only to the student; or
- An assignment to repeat the work, to be graded on its merits.
- Group “B” Sanctions (UWS 14.06) Disciplinary sanction imposed following a report of academic misconduct by the instructor.
- A lower or failing grade on the particular assignment or test;
- A lower grade in the course;
- A failing grade in the course;
- Removal of the student from the course in progress;
- A written reprimand to be included in the student’s disciplinary file.
- Group “C” Sanctions (UWS 14.07) Disciplinary sanction imposed following a report of academic misconduct by the investigating officer.
- Disciplinary probation; or
- Suspension or expulsion from the university.
Third Step
- If Group “A” Sanction Imposed
- Sanction imposed by instructor. Email documetation is sent to student, DOSO and IO.
- If Group “B” Sanction Imposed
- Instructor prepares letter describing misconduct, naming sanctions, and notifying student of right to a hearing, with copy of procedures. Report sent to student, DOSO and IO.
- If Group “C” Sanction Imposed
- Instructor prepares letter describing misconduct and proposing sanctions. Report sent to Investigating Officer (IO), who conducts an investigation and makes determination. Per UWS 14.07, IO may recommend sanctions other than those recommended by instructor.
- No Academic Misconduct
- End of Process
- Academic Misconduct
- IO prepares letter describing the misconduct, recommending sanctions, and notifying student of right to a hearing. Report sent to student’s instructor and DOSO.
- No Academic Misconduct
- Instructor prepares letter describing misconduct and proposing sanctions. Report sent to Investigating Officer (IO), who conducts an investigation and makes determination. Per UWS 14.07, IO may recommend sanctions other than those recommended by instructor.
Hearing
Hearing conducted only if student requests within 10 days of reccommendation of Group A Sanction or Group B Sanctions
- No Hearing Request
- Sanction Imposed
- End of Process
- Request for a Hearing
- DOSO will proceed to schedule a hearing as set forth by UWS 14.08.
If Group C is recommened a Academic Misconduct Hearing is automatically scheduled by DOSO, unless waived by the student.

- Hearing Not Waived
- Proceed to hearing as scheduled by DOSO
Hearing Scheduled
Decision sent to student. Final in 10 days unless appealed.
Student appeals the Academic Misconduct Hearing Committee’s Decision
- If the Academic Misconduct Hearing Committee reccommends a Group C sanction, student may appeal per UWS 14.09 to the Chancellor or designee.
- Student may appeal to chancellor or designee within 10 days of receipt of the Academic Misconduct Hearing Committee’s decision.
- If the Academic Misconduct Hearing Committee reccommends a Group A or Group B sanction, the student may appeal per UWS 14.10 Discretionary appeal to the Board of Regents.
- Student may request appeal to the Board of Regents.
