The University strives to create a positive, safe and health environment for all of its students. These expectations begin when a student first enrolls at a UW-System school and continue throughout their academic career. These policies are found in the UW-System Administrative Code which applies to all UW-System campuses and students. Students are responsible for understanding and supporting University policies and are expected to uphold and abide by the community standards established by the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and the UW System.

Polices

  • Chapter UWS 17 — Student Nonacademic Disciplinary Procedures – contains policies and procedures for addressing alleged student behavioral misconduct. These policies apply regardless of where the behavior occurs.
  • Chapter UWS 18 — Conduct on University Lands – contains policies that govern conduct on university lands to address behavior of students, faculty, staff, and guests.
  • Additional UWM and UW system policies

Student Non-Academic Misconduct Process

  • When a complaint is received, it is assessed for potential violations of the University of Wisconsin System Administrative Code, Chapter 17.
  • In the event of a student conduct complaint, a notice letter with the policies allegedly violated is sent to the student, and they are instructed to meet with an Investigating Officer.
  • The Investigating Officer speaks with the student and can collect additional information relevant to assessing whether or not a violation of the policies occurred.
  • The Investigating Officer makes a decision based on whether a violation of the policies occurred, and a decision letter is sent to the student with the outcome and a rationale for the decision.
  • The student has the right to appeal the investigating officer’s finding by requesting a hearing before the Non-Academic Misconduct Hearing Committee or Examiner.

Non-Academic Misconduct Disciplinary Probation Reduction

Disciplinary Probation Reduction is a process that allows a student to request that their disciplinary probation be reduced by showing to the university their growth and development since the non-academic misconduct incident that led to the sanction.

  • Who is eligible?
    • A student who has been placed on non-academic disciplinary probation and at least half of the disciplinary probationary period has passed.
  • Who is not eligible?
    • The student was assigned disciplinary probation through an academic misconduct (UWS 14) case.
    • The student was assigned disciplinary probation through a sexual misconduct (Title IX) case.
    • The student is the subject of a pending investigation of non-academic misconduct by the Dean of Students Office.
    • The student was found responsible another incident of non-academic misconduct while serving the disciplinary probation.  (Note an incident of academic misconduct or violations within university housing do not automatically make a student ineligible but will be taken into consideration when approving a request for Disciplinary Probation Reduction).
    • The student has previously requested and been approved to have a prior disciplinary probation reduced through the Disciplinary Probation Reduction process.
