Speaker: Prof. Ao Wang (Wesleyan University)

Host: Prof. Jue Chen (University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee)

Time: 2:30-3:45 pm Central Time, 12/7/2022

Location: Bolton Hall B95

This online talk discusses how contemporary Chinese poets such as Zhu Zhu, Chen Dongdong, and Bai Hua have reconnected with the regional poetic tradition associated with the Jiangnan area and how they have used this regionalism to bypass the centralized discourse of a national literature. The floating, dreamy world imagined in their poetry incorporates both ancient history and contemporary reality, which is further complicated by the renovation of historical sites and contemporary literary tourism.

The talk is open to UWM faculty, students, and the public in Bolton B95. For online access, send request to Prof. Jue Chen at chen348@uwm.edu

Ao Wang is Associate Professor of East Asian Studies at Wesleyan University. His research focuses primarily on Chinese poetry and its intersections with other literary genres and intellectual fields. He writes literary criticism in both his native Chinese and English.

Jue Chen is Assistant Professor of Chinese and the Coordinator of the Chinese Program at UWM.
