Join us on Saturday, March 7, at 1:00 pm in Celtic Milwaukee Center, 1532 N Wauwatosa Ave for a presentation by Dr Brian Ó Conchubhair entitled ” When Douglas Hyde came to Milwaukee in 1905″.
Hyde-a scholar, linguist, and lifelong promoter of Gaelic culture and heritage-was elected the first President of Ireland in 1938. On behalf of the Gaelic League he undertook a fundraising trip through the United States in 1905-06. He recorded his visit in journals, the most recent bilingual edition of these diary entries was published last year.
Ó Conchubhair is Associate Professor of Irish Language and Literature at the University of Notre Dame and serves as the Director of the Center for the Study of Languages & Cultures since 2013. He is currently completing a biography of the author Flann O’Brien/Myles na Gopaleen. Recently he was translator and co-editor of Douglas Hyde: My American Journey UCD Press.
Refreshments will be served. The talk is free and open to the public.
