Biography
James Syrek is a filmmaker, director, and educator with extensive experience in both television and film production. Holding an MFA in Film, he has worked across multiple formats, including studio films, major network and streaming television, and documentary projects. His creative portfolio includes short & feature films, television pilots, and documentaries that have screened at festivals and engaged audiences through streaming platforms and broadcast outlets.
In addition to his professional directing work, James has spent over a decade teaching film and television at the college level. He has taught courses in directing, screenwriting, cinematography, editing, and producing, with particular expertise in directing, studio production, and location-based narrative filmmaking. His teaching combines technical mastery with creative storytelling, preparing students to direct in a wide range of genres — from drama and comedy to live broadcast and emerging media formats.
James is also experienced in production management and collaboration across disciplines, working with cinematographers, editors, designers, and actors to realize compelling stories. His on-set teaching style emphasizes clear communication, inclusivity, and professional practices that mirror industry standards.
Beyond the classroom, James has been a leader in curriculum innovation. He has developed and overseen numerous online and hybrid film and media courses, training instructors in best practices for digital teaching and ensuring students receive accessible, high-quality creative education. His work integrates industry-standard tools — including Adobe Premiere Pro, After Effects, and DaVinci Resolve — as well as contemporary digital workflows, giving students hands-on experience with the same technologies used in professional production environments.

His mission as an educator and director is to help students find their artistic voice, master their craft, and prepare for meaningful careers in film, television, and media production.
