A new Indiana University Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology (IUMAA) is set to open in October of 2023 on the flagship campus in Bloomington, Indiana. This new museum will house and exhibit archaeological and ethnographic objects that were previously part of the Glenn A. Black Laboratory of Archaeology (GBL) and the Mathers Museum of World Cultures (MMWC) collections (the GBL and MMWC merged in 2020). With an updated mission and modern strategic plan, the new museum will focus on openness, communication, and education and include visible storage and a virtual reality exhibit on Angel Mounds, a Mississippian site located in Evansville, Indiana. Another exhibit will display textiles and jewelry from Asia Minor, Central Asia, and North Africa, while two additional exhibits will focus on the scientific methods that archaeologists use and the way that museums acquire collections.
