Welcome! Urban Studies Programs combine passion for social justice with hard-edged social science research in classes taught by faculty with urban expertise.
We offer students two interdisciplinary social science graduate programs led by more than 25 faculty from four schools/colleges across 10 departments from architecture, geography, and history to public administration, sociology and urban planning among others. Our over 800 alumni have gone on to distinguished careers in academia, research institutions, government, and nonprofit agencies.
- UWM is a premier R1 urban, research university with over 5,000 graduate students and 21,000 undergraduates and is home to the Urban Affairs Association.
- Urban Studies faculty are affiliated with the Center for Economic Development and urban studies students may apply to be fellows in the MIED program with Americorps/Vista/Public Allies background.

Master’s Degree Program
The Master’s degree program in Urban Studies and the MLIS coordinated degree program with library science provide students with a broad understanding of urban society and train them in research techniques appropriate to the study of metropolitan communities. The course of study stresses the understanding of social processes and the analysis of social and economic policies affecting cities. Learn more about the Master’s Program.
PhD Program
The PhD program in Urban Studies emphasizes history, research methodology, and social science theory, and prepares students to conduct sophisticated research in the field of urban studies.
