What is Supplemental Instruction?
Review. Practice. Succeed.
The Student Success Center’s Supplemental Instruction (SI) program is a FREE, course-specific, peer-facilitated group study session that was developed to improve retention and academic success within historically challenging courses. SI sessions are held 3-4 times per week throughout the semester by a SI Leader. Leaders are successful students who have already mastered the course material. SI sessions are designed to be a fun and interactive way to learn the course material through group activities, discussions, and games! All you need to bring are any course materials that will help you be prepared to engage in the session.
Benefits
- Review the course material.
- Learn new and effective ways to study.
- Build relationships with peers who are in the same field of study.
- Increase your understanding of course content
- Earn higher grades — our program’s data shows a GPA difference of +0.58 for students who attended SI in Fall 2022.
Expectations and Guidelines
While our staff hopes students find their SI experience in our center helpful and rewarding, we do ask that students keep the following in mind while utilizing our services.
Attendance
- Supplemental Instruction (SI) allows students to drop-in at any of the SI Leader’s weekly scheduled sessions. No advanced sign-up is required!
During a Session
- SI Leaders are here to assist you in understanding the material, review important concepts, and help you study for the course. They cannot do a homework assignment for you, nor are they able to substitute for attending lectures.
- You are expected to come to the SI session with your course materials and be ready to focus on the subject matter. Please be respectful and engaged with the session, put away smart phones, etc.
- SI Leaders are here for you. If you have specific questions that you want answered or concerns about the material, let the SI Leader know!
Use of Services
- You must currently be enrolled for credit in the course for which you want to attend Supplemental Instruction.
- Students may participate in SI multiple times a week for the same course if they wish (this includes exam review sessions). However, the material covered during SI sessions may not change within a given week.
- We provide group supplemental instruction; we do not guarantee any individual SI sessions.
Confidentiality
- Student Success Center retains the right to share information about your participation in tutoring with the UWM administration, faculty, and with your advisor.
If you have any concerns about your tutoring experience, please contact us at ssc@uwm.edu or stop by Bolton 120

Points of Pride & What Do Students Say
SI Leader was very sensitive to students’ input and willing to work on concepts that I really need help with! Also pushes me to be interactive, for example, solving problems at the board.
I really enjoy my SI Leader! She is very prepared for every session and always is patient with me and other students.
