A River Runs, Turns, Erases, Replaces

April 8, 2022 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm

This screening is free for everyone!

In Mitchell Hall B91!

A work of slow non-fiction cinema that contrasts mid-pandemic surveillance video of Wuhan’s empty streets with footage captured before the COVID outbreak in this becalmed, wordless meditation on the vulnerability and resilience of urban spaces. Interspersed with exquisitely composed images of life and hope along the Yangtze River are pieces of on-screen text translating the poignant, sometimes wrenching letters written to loved ones affected by illness and death. A work of dissolution and regeneration, architecture and landscape, a portrait of a city and a world in transition.

Co-sponsored by Moving Image Society and Film Studies at UWM; Followed by Q&A with the filmmaker and producer

(Shengze Zhu, China, Without Dialogue, 87min, 2021, Digital)
