What Happened Was…
Winner of Sundance's Grand Jury Prize, Tom Noonan’s directorial debut is a darkly humorous take on the dread of dating. Featuring powerhouse performances by Noonan and Karen Sillas as two lonely hearts spending one claustrophobic Friday night together, the film exposes with startling clarity the ways in which people struggle to connect, as relevant now as ever.
Trainspotting | 30th Anniversary Restoration
An adrenaline shot to the heart of British cinema, Danny Boyle’s darkly comic breakthrough relates the life and times of live-wire Scottish heroin addict Mark Renton (Ewan McGregor) and his misfit mates, who get high, get in trouble, get clean, and get high again, all in a heroic bid to outrun the banality of modern existence. Cut to an iconic soundtrack of Nineties techno, rock, and Brit-pop, the restoration of this cult classic chooses life again in all its ugly, beautiful, terrifying exultation.
American Dreams (lost and found)
Milwaukee-born filmmaker James Benning's austere personal history of the USA from 1954 to 1976, told through an amalgamation of his Hank Aaron card collection with the scrolling scrawl of would-be Nixon assassin Arthur Bremer's diaries. Benning describes the film as an homage to his own coming-of-age, combining his love of baseball with interests in American history, politics, and popular culture to achieve a formally complex and aesthetically challenging take on the American Dream.
Eight Bridges | Milwaukee Premiere
“It seems to be the time to consider bridges.” James Benning’s latest exercise in looking and listening centers on meeting points between built and natural worlds, ranging from the cinematic (San Francisco’s Golden Gate) to the historical (Selma’s Edmund Pettus) to the self-referential (North Dakota’s Hi-Line Railroad). Its rich sound and painterly compositions seize variously on the passing of clouds, the flowing of water, and the churn of commuters to link physical manifestations of the American project with contemporary flows of people and capital.
