Screamplay
An aspiring screenwriter comes to Hollywood to make it in the movies... only to wind up as janitor of a fleabag apartment run by a greasy ex-boxer (George Kuchar). When the writer channels frustrations with his kooky neighbors into fodder for a new screenplay, the vivid murders he imagines start to happen for real, and the line between fiction and fantasy begins to smear. A singularly charming tribute to Old Hollywood and a marvel of low-budget, high-concept filmmaking.
Horror Games Night
On October 24th from 5 to 7 PM, please join the Film and Media Studies Graduate Student Association for a night of flash talks and gaming at the Union's eSports Lounge! Media studies graduate students Jordon Jacobson, Emma Culver, and Alyssa Lambert will present short presentations on the topic of horror in gaming, followed by a chance for attendees to play the games discussed in the presentations along with a selection of others. Minamata Mandala
Filmed over fifteen years, this six-hour epic by documentarian Kazuo Hara chronicles the history of struggle for a fishing community suffering from a debilitating neurological disease caused by industrial methylmercury contamination of fish as they wage a decades-long battle for legal recognition and government reparations. A deeply humanizing portrait of the survivors, care providers, researchers, and their supporters, and a comprehensive chronicle of one of the worst environmental tragedies in human history.
