Join Outdoor Pursuits for a “Gourmet at the Beach” evening at Kohler-Andrae State Park! We’ll head from campus to the state park, where we’ll cook a delicious dinner and dessert together, enjoy it picnic-style on the sand, and watch the sun set over the waves before heading back to campus. Carmen Alicia Murguía is a proud U.S.-born poet and writer whose work explores love, Latinidad, politics, queer identity, and culture. She’s the author of six poetry collections and has been featured in academic journals, anthologies, and interviews on NPR, PBS, and other media outlets. Carmen began her poetry journey at The Loft Literary Center through the Inroads: Emerging Chicano/Latino Writer’s Mentorship Program and has since performed at festivals and venues across the country, including New York, Chicago, Minneapolis, and San Antonio. Join us as we launch from UWM's School of Freshwater Science public boat landing on the Kinnickinnic River and paddle out on to Lake Michigan. Did you know that the Milwaukee area is one of the surfing capitals of the Midwest? Lake Michigan is great to learn how to surf and provides a practice ground for bigger water. This surfing class is geared toward first time surfers who have never been on a board before! We will provide wet suits, personal flotation devices (PFD), surf boards, instruction, booties (if needed), and gloves (if needed). You will learn the beginner skills of how to “pop up,” stand up, and control a surfboard.
