Field education is a key component of the BSW and the MSW social work programs in the Helen Bader School of Social Welfare at UW-Milwaukee.

Hundreds of agencies in Wisconsin and surrounding states have partnered with UWM to provide a practicum experience where a student’s educational knowledge is integrated with social work practice. A supervised field practicum provides opportunities for students to develop social work skills by applying social work theory to real-life practice situations in social service agencies.

Students are tasked with learning and demonstrating the nine Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) competencies through their field education experience.

The social work field education staff are invested in assisting students in their transition from the classroom to direct social work practice in an effort to make the practicum a memorable and significant experience in the development of each student’s professional social work skills. In an effort to ensure the most optimal learning experience in the social work field placement, we welcome suggestions for program improvement.
