The Institutional Review Board (IRB) reviews all human subjects research conducted by UWM faculty, staff, and students.

All submissions (new studies, amendments, continuing reviews, and determination forms) are reviewed in the order in which they were received. IRB office reviews are currently taking approximately 8-10 business days (1.5-2 weeks) from the date of submission. After that, your submission may be: 1) sent to a reviewer; 2) returned to you for revisions; or 3) approved.

Announcements

Amazon Mechanical Turk (MTurk) Closure

We recently learned that Amazon Mechanical Turk (MTurk) will be closed as a research participant recruitment/data collection platform effective September 30, 2026. https://www.mturk.com/help

If your IRB protocol currently uses Amazon MTurk for participant recruitment, data collection, or other research activities, you will need to submit an IRB amendment to update your protocol and describe your plans for transitioning to an alternative platform or recruitment method.

Submit your amendment as soon as possible to allow sufficient time for IRB review and approval before September 30, 2026. The amendment should clearly describe any proposed changes to:

  • Participant recruitment or enrollment procedures
  • Participant compensation or payment procedures
  • Data collection procedures
  • Recruitment materials
  • Any other aspect of the protocol affected by the transition away from MTurk

Do not begin using a new recruitment platform or implement changes to your approved protocol until the amendment has received IRB approval.

International Research Advisory

If you are planning travel to a country with a Level 3 or 4 travel advisory, please contact the Center for International Education (CIE). The CIE, through the Provost Office, is responsible for the International Travel Policy.  Under the policy, students are prohibited from traveling for UWM research purposes to countries at a threat level 3 or 4. However, if the PI and student researcher work with CIE, a waiver may be obtained in certain cases. CIE can help navigate the process and be a resource for you.
