The law studies option is for students interested in law and courts. They can focus some of their coursework within the major on law-related courses including Law & Society, Constitutional Law, The Supreme Court, and Judicial Behavior. Any student interested in the law may select the law studies option within the political science major – you don’t have to be pre-law intended, though many students are.
For those students who do declare a pre-law intent, there is also a dedicated pre-law advisor available who will help you understand the milestones needed to prepare to apply to law school.
UWM also has an active mock trial student organization, another valuable experience that can enhance a resume.
Some law studies students seek out paid or unpaid positions in the campus’ legal clinic to also gain hands-on experience. With supervision, students work with other students who are experiencing a legal problem, most commonly involving a landlord or a lease.
And, some students seek outside training to become a certified paralegal, giving them more options for internships and part-time work while in college.
