The Milwaukee Quantum Initiative (MQI) combines the research strengths of the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee with the innovation and manufacturing capabilities of Wisconsin’s largest industrial region. Working closely with technical colleges and industry partners, MQI seeks to advance quantum science, engineering, and technology while supporting workforce development and economic growth.

UWM has established expertise in quantum materials, quantum sensing, quantum communications, and quantum information science, supported by strong programs in physics, engineering, computer science, and advanced manufacturing. Located in southeastern Wisconsin and near major industries in Illinois, MQI is well positioned to connect academia, industry, and government to transform quantum research into practical applications. By building on the region’s manufacturing heritage and growing technology sector, MQI aims to strengthen Wisconsin’s role in the emerging quantum economy through collaboration with Wisconsin Technology Council, Wisconsin Quantum Alliance, Wisconsin Quantum Institute, and other regional partners.
