Please use this request form to request an appointment so that we can have your materials ready for your arrival.

All researchers must register to use our collections. Members of the public are welcome to research our collections. Photo ID is required for access to archival records. Visitors are also encouraged to wash their hands before handling archival materials.

Location

The UWM Archives is located on the third floor of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Library. To reach the third floor, visitors may either use the main library elevator, located to the right in the coffee shop area, or the main library stairs, located to the left behind the Welcome Desk.

Accessible entrances

There are ramps and curb cuts leading from the Hartford Ave. parking lot to the main entrance. The main entrance to the library has push-button access, and from the entrance there are multiple elevators to the 3rd floor.

Refreshments

The library has a coffee shop (The Grind) onsite next to the main entrance that serves drinks and a few food items. Please be aware of The Grind’s hours which differ from the library.

There are also vending machines on the first floor to the right of the research help desk. Food and drinks may be brought into the archives reception area and kept with other possessions in lockable lockers there while researching in the reading room.

There is a bubbler/water fountain and bottle refilling station by the bathrooms just around the corner from the Archives Gallery.

Bathrooms

There are two gender-neutral single-occupancy bathrooms around the corner from the Archives Gallery, and additional bathrooms down the hall in the foyer of the American Geographical Society Library.

The bathrooms on the second floor by the main stairwell have accessible entrances and changing stations.

Storing Items

The archives offers a coat rack and lockable lockers in the reception area for researchers to stow their possessions while researching in the reading room.

Phones, Devices, and Wifi

Electronic devices including phones and laptops may be used (silently) in the reading room. The Golda Meir Library has guest Wi-Fi available for researchers, and there are electrical outlets at each table in the reading room to keep devices charged.

Both the reading room and the 3rd floor outside of the archives are designated quiet study areas. The Archives Reception Room, however, offers seating for visiting with others or taking phone calls during your research visit.
