Please present your UWM ID at the Borrowing Services desk in the library in order to check out library materials from the general collection. Each person is responsible for all material borrowed with their ID.

Proxy Accounts

Faculty/Staff members at UWM may select one or more individuals to be their proxy at the UWM Libraries so long as the proxy is also part of the UWM Community (staff/student). These individuals may borrow and request materials in your name. When an item is checked out by proxy, it shows up directly on your personal record – not the proxy’s. You will be responsible for all materials checked out in your name by a proxy. It will also be your responsibility to supply the UWM libraries with end-dates after which an individual is no longer your proxy. Requesting that someone become your proxy and updating their end-date can both be done by filling out a request on this web form.

Faculty/Staff at UWM have access to a variety of reciprocal borrowing privileges at other institutions.

Borrowing Policies

The following policies apply to items circulated from the general collection of the library. Equipment and some media items are restricted to UWM students, staff, and faculty and may have different loan periods.

Graduate Student/Faculty/Staff Loan Periods

UWM Libraries materials are due at the end of the current semester, renewable for up to five calendar years. Items on loan from other UW System libraries are only renewable for up to two years. Items checked out during the Summer Session are due at the end of the Fall Semester.

Undergraduate Student Loan Periods

All General Collection items are checked out for 28 days, renewable up to 84 days total.

Retired Staff/Emeritus Loan Periods

UWM Libraries materials are due at the end of the current semester, renewable for up to five calendar years. Items on loan from other UW System libraries are only renewable for up to two years. Items checked out during the Summer Session are due at the end of the Fall Semester. Individuals that have been granted Emeritus status by the Chancellor will continue to have access to online subscription resources.

Renewals

Renewals are done in Search@UW through ‘My Library Account’.

After clicking on the “Renew Items” button, the user should verify the new date, and report any problems to the borrowing services desk as soon as possible. Books from the general collection may also be brought to the Borrowing Services Desk and renewed in person.

After your renewal limit has expired, it may be reset by returning the items in person to the library borrowing services desk and checking them back out immediately. You may do this as long as you retain your status at UWM.

Overdue Items

As a courtesy reminder only, an overdue notice is sent on the day after an item is due. Failure to receive this reminder is not an excuse for voiding overdue service charges.

Faculty/Staff will receive all Overdue Notices via their UWM e-mail account.

Collections

Fines and fees over $200.00 which remain unpaid for 60 days or more may be sent to a Collection agency.

Damaged Materials

You are responsible for all material checked out on your ID and should point out noticeable damage before checking out any material. Library materials that are returned damaged will be assessed a service charge based on the cost of repairing the damaged item. If the item cannot be repaired, a replacement charge will apply. Charges will vary and payment is the responsibility of the borrowing patron.

Account Eligibility and Termination Criteria

Library accounts for affiliated patrons (students and employees) are based on the ePanther Account system run by UITS, and are therefore subject to the ePanther Account Deprovisioning conditions and process. Questions about your ePanther account should be addressed to the Help Desk.

Complimentary library borrowing privileges are granted to UWM alumni for a period of one year following graduation. To receive a Borrowing Card, recent graduates should present proof of graduation and their UWM ID to Borrowing Services staff at the Golda Meir Library’s Borrowing Services Desk. Please note that, due to licensing terms, remote access to library collections (such as databases and e-journals) is not included with this service. Borrowing from other libraries via interlibrary loan is also not offered.
