Targeted/Underrepresented Minority includes:
African-American, American Indian, Latinx, Southeast Asian American, and Targeted Multi-Ethnic students (multi-ethnic students reporting one of these race/ethnicities)
Non-Targeted/Non-Underrepresented Minority includes:
Asian American, International, White, and Non-Targeted Multi-Ethnic students (multi-ethnic students reporting any combination of these race/ethnicities)
Multi-Ethnic/Other Race
Prior to Fall 2008, students were reported with a single race category (no multi-ethnic, no “other race” categories).
Starting Fall 2008, multi-ethnic and other race categories were implemented. Local reporting (i.e. OAIR reports/dashboards) counts all multi-ethnic students in the “Multi-Ethnic” category including multi-ethnic Latinx students.
A “Multi Race/Ethnicity” report option is available where students are “double-counted,” i.e. for each race/ethnicity, there is a count of how many students report that race/ethnicity alone and how many report the race/ethnicity in addition to other race/ethnicities. The sum of those figures represents the number of students at UWM who report, in whole or part, any particular race/ethnicity. However, the sum of all the categories will be greater than the total headcount of all students as any student reporting multiple race/ethnicities will be counted in each category. This option is available for the New Freshmen/New Transfer Retention & Graduation dashboards and the Comparison of Enrollment dashboard.
Hispanic/Latinx
US Department of Education guidelines (used in Hispanic Serving Institutions initiative) count all Hispanic/Latinx students in the “Hispanic/Latino” category regardless of whether they are multi-ethnic. This differs from our local reporting method which counts all multi-ethnic students in the “Multi-Ethnic” category including multi-ethnic Latinx students.
