Guidelines on Utilization of Associate or Assistant Vice Chancellor Titles

Below, please find the guidelines for utilizing the associate or assistant vice chancellor TTC or business titles at UWM.

  1. The most appropriate TTC title shall be assigned based on the market and industry standard and the position’s roles and responsibilities.
  2. Business titles should only be assigned per the current guidelines listed on the UWM Human Resources website.

    A business title should:

    • Clarify a position’s role in the organization.
    • Describe the work performed in a role.
    • Align with industry best practice.

    A business title should not:

    • Duplicate a title of record.
    • Misrepresent the university or the authority of a position.
    • Use words typically associated with executive titles.
  3. When considering usage of the associate or assistant vice chancellor titles in their division, the respective vice chancellor shall receive approval by the Chancellor of UWM.
  4. In addition to meeting the criteria of the TTC standard job description, an employee assigned to or utilizing the associate or assistant vice chancellor title should:
    • Receive written supervisory approval prior to use.
    • Meet the criteria of both a functional area leader and people leader.
    • Be responsible for administrative leadership over one or more departments.
    • Have a strategic role and responsibilities separate and distinct from the operational work of their direct reports.
    • Utilize the appropriate market equivalent position or TTC title in addition to the business title to better reflect the scope of duties and their expertise, e.g., Associate Vice Chancellor of Human Resources or Associate Vice Chancellor and Chief Human Resources Officer.
  5. Generally, an associate vice chancellor should:
    • Report to a vice chancellor.
    • Lead at least one department, which houses approximately 3 or more units or large-scale programs whose scope impacts the entire institution.
    • Supervise at least two director-level positions or higher.
  6. Generally, an assistant vice chancellor should:
    • Report to a vice chancellor.
    • Lead at least one department, which houses 1 or more units or large-scale programs whose scope impacts the entire institution.
    • Supervise at least one director-level position or higher.
