Financial support for graduate students falls generally into five categories:
- Teaching assistantships – students receive benefits in exchange for teaching introductory coursework such as a salary, stipend or tuition remission.
- Fellowships from the UWM Graduate School
- Fellowships from external sources
- Scholarships and awards from the History Department
- Travel research grants from the History Department
