Cultures and Communities

The Cultures & Communities Program is a leader in promoting and strengthening the university’s engagement with the Milwaukee community.

Thanks in part to work by Cultures & Communities, and which continues today in community-based learning and engaged scholarship, UW-Milwaukee is recognized as a Community Engaged Classified Campus by the Carnegie Foundation. Through the courses and service experiences we offer our students and through our many partnerships in the Milwaukee community, Cultures & Communities continues to help students become engaged citizens in today’s diverse world.

The Cultures & Communities Certificate is one of just a few of its kind in the country. It gives students a chance to meet basic education requirements as they explore cultural diversity, both in the classroom and through service in the Milwaukee community. Students who earn the Certificate are able to select from a broad array of courses that examine race, gender, class, sexuality and social justice from contemporary and historical perspectives.

Engaged Teaching, Research, and Service Learning represent the core ingredients of the Cultures & Communities (C&C) Program for faculty. C&C promotes mutually beneficial partnerships that bring faculty, students and community members together to create critically valuable teaching, research and learning opportunities.

Initiatives build and strengthen community-university partnerships. This is a long-standing commitment of the Cultures & Communities Program and the UWM Center for Student Experience & Talent.
