Our program will provide you with a wealth of knowledge pertaining to information technology, with focused attention on the skills needed to support the translation of knowledge into clinical care.
MS health care informatics students will develop the skills to access and synthesize the large amount of scientific knowledge necessary to support clinical care. Master of library and information science students will be prepared for a career in health care informatics or as a clinical informationist.
The Coordinated MS Health Care Informatics/Master of Library & Information Science program is offered cooperatively by the Health Care Informatics program at the UWM Zilber College of Public Health and the School of Information Studies.
You will learn to master critical functions, such as systems analysis and design, database and project management, decision support and network design. The program will provide you with tangible competencies, including the ability to:
- Understand medical science and terminology at an appropriate level for managing health care information systems.
- Analyze administrative information systems within health care institutionals.
- Identify, analyze and interpret ethical and information policy issues connected with health care information systems and associated individuals.
- Evaluate and apply appropriate information systems, classification systems, information retrieval systems and related support literature within health care environments.
- Identify, retrieve, organize, store, repackage and share relevant institutional, administrative, patient and other health care-related information.
To apply to the Coordinated MS Health Care Informatics/Master of Library & Information Science program, you must apply to the UWM Graduate School.
In addition to UWM Graduate School admission requirements, a GRE will be required, except in cases of exceptional prior academic performance or experience.

The Master of Science in Health Care Informatics program component of the coordinated program includes 29 credits spread over nine content areas, finishing with a thesis or project.
The Master of Library and Information Science component of the coordinated program includes 27 credits of School of Information Studies courses. These include four core courses (12 credits) and five electives (15 credits), chosen to complement the other courses in the coordinated program and in accordance with individual student goals.
