Laura Carlton (Master Student)
Hello everyone, I’m Laura Carlton and I am excited to be pursuing my MS in Geography specifically the professional GIS track. I earned my BS in Conservation and Environmental Science with a minor in Biological Sciences and Spanish here at UWM in 2024. I also completed my GIS certificate last semester.
During my undergrad, I did an internship in Tenerife, Spain where I collected and analyzed data on whales and dolphins. By using photo identification of their fins, we were able to track the movement and migration patterns of these marine species around the Canary Islands. This internship sparked my passion for working with and protecting wildlife, specifically those at risk of extinction. After completing my master’s, I hope to use GIS to conduct endangered species assessments, wildlife surveys and habitat mapping to support wildlife conservation.
When I am not doing schoolwork, I enjoy thrifting, knitting, reading and exploring new coffee shops around Milwaukee. I’m excited to learn more about GIS and pursue a career in environmental GIS. I look forward to meeting everyone and building connections!
