Sex and Gender Have Never Been Binaries

In the U.S. today, most people believe that physical sex is a natural binary. But factually speaking, sex characteristics fall on a spectrum. Today many are unaware of this because intersexuality is treated as a disorder and hidden through surgery and shame. But this is new. World societies previously found many ways to categorize and accept people of intermediate sex. This gave rise to a variety of multiple gender systems, and paths for people to be assigned to them, or to assign themselves. This talk will familiarize the audience with sex and gender variance, today and in the past.
