Session 2

Speaker: Sandra Lucia Osorio, PhD

Date/Time: Saturday, October 7 from 9:00 to 11:00 am

Title of Presentation: Expansive View of Multilingualism: How to Bring Black Language, Bidialectalism, and Translanguaging in the Classroom Space

Summary: Children come into the classroom with a wealth of knowledge that many times include multiple languages. This presentation calls for a more linguistically expansive orientation in classrooms that invites educators to move beyond language separation and the use of a “standard” English language. Therefore, making space for and affirming students’ dynamic languaging and dynamically lingual identities. By “expansive” we refer to widening what is treated as acceptable language for schooling. Expansive language ideologies recognize context-specific uses and the power of knowing that many acceptable language types serve diverse purposes, especially in a 21st-century, diverse, globalized, and technologically mediated world.
