Session 1

Speaker: Meghan L. Green, EdD

Date/Time: Saturday, September 9 from 9:00 to 11:00 am

Title of Presentation: Rooted in Testimonio and Sankofa: Utilizing Community Storying with Multiethnic and Multilingual Families

Summary: Community cultural wealth refers to the various forms of knowledge, skills, and resources that exist within Communities of Color (Yosso, 2005). It maintains that Communities of Color possess rich cultural assets that can contribute to our well-being and collective success. Recognizing and valuing community cultural wealth is important for culturally sustainable and inclusive early childhood educators as it highlights the expertise and assets that exist within Communities of Color (Flores & Springer, 2021). During this session, teacher candidates will explore strategies for leveraging and building upon these cultural wealth resources through rich, culturally sustainable literacy practices such as community storying and family journey stories. We will examine how our lived experiences offer entry provocations into our origin stories and how we can infuse storying into our authentic engagement with multiethnic and multilingual families and communities.
