The master’s degree in economics can be used for career advancement in administrative and research positions in government, business and labor. Or, it can serve as preparation to apply for a doctoral program in economics. Our master’s program provides well-rounded training in economic theory, data analysis, econometrics, industrial organization, international economics, labor economics, monetary theory and policy, and urban economics.
Graduates of our MA program will be able to:
- Demonstrate understanding of core economic theories and applications in microeconomics, macroeconomics and econometrics.
- Apply quantitative and analytical techniques to effectively analyze economic issues and data.
- Formulate research topics and conduct independent investigations integrating economic knowledge.
- Effectively communicate key economic theories and applications in written form.

Admissions Requirements
In addition to meeting the admissions requirements of the Graduate School, applicants to the master’s program must have an undergraduate major in economics and one semester of calculus OR economics coursework at the undergraduate level equivalent to two semesters of intermediate economic theory, one semester of statistics, and one semester of calculus.
Admissions Deadlines
We have a rolling admissions deadline for the master’s program. All applications are completed through the Graduate School.
STEM Designation
Our graduate programs (MA and PhD) are classified as STEM (CIP Code 45.0603: Econometrics and Quantitative Economics). International students in such STEM degree programs can apply for a 24 month STEM extension of the F1 visa under Optional Practical Training (OPT).
Graduate Grievance Procedures
Federal law and UWM policy require programs and departments to have procedures for graduate students to appeal academic decisions such as grades or scholastic standing.
