Artist Talk with Mindy Wittock

7 pm

In Mindy Wittock’s work, she uses sewing and stitching techniques to create soft sculptures and textiles that are inspired by the intangible phantom of nostalgia. She collects objects and cloth to build pieces and cover surfaces that explore memory of a time passed. The act of sewing, of passing each object through her hands as she embellishes, is the act of preserving the limitations of memory and fusing together the past and present with each stitch.

MONDAY, APRIL 6

Artist Talk with Frank Korb

7 pm

Frank Korb is known for his abstract and plein air works and focuses on the formality of the push and pull of the elements and principles of art in his work. Through the act of laying down the textures of bible pages to build a grid and real texture, he then adds colors, shapes, and additional texture as he considers the dynamics of the space in the picture plane and works toward a balance and harmony. While the intent with which Korb begins each work is important, he is equally concerned with the interpretation of the viewer regarding the relationships he creates within his work.

DIGITAL ARCHIVE PROJECTS

————-

Rwandan Genocide Commemoration

Professor Sarah Davies Cordova is collecting photos from individuals in the UWM and Milwaukee area in order to create a photo collage to remember and honor the victims and survivors of the genocide of Tutsi in Rwanda. The goal is to complete the project within the 25th commemoration year, which closes April 7. The photo collage is in line with the project that Bruce Clark and Gaël Faye first enacted in 2014 for the 20th commemoration. Please email your photo as an attachment to 2019commemorate@gmail.com.

Covid-19 MKE

The project aims to document how the Milwaukee area experienced the COVID-19 pandemic of 2020. It was built by students in Professor Christopher D. Cantwell’s “Local History Research Methods” class and is hosted by the Golda Meir Library at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. All of the material on the site, however, was contributed by members of the greater Milwaukee community. Your contribution is welcome.
