Biology is the study of life. Biologists analyze organism functions at the cellular and molecular levels using genetics, biochemistry, and microscopy.

They also study interactions between organisms and the environment by examining behavior, morphology, physiology, and genetics. UWM’s nationally and internationally recognized faculty train students in a wide range of research areas. Student training is focused on research design, critical analysis of data, and development of effective written and oral communication skills.

Research is a defining feature of the department and is fully integrated into our teaching mission. Faculty-led research spans multiple levels of biological organization and approaches, and students are encouraged to participate directly in discovery through hands-on research and mentorship.
