The Director of Graduate Studies (DGS) provides guidance to MA students throughout their time in the program, but particularly during the first year. The DGS helps students to select appropriate courses for the timely completion of the degree. The DGS also serves as primary faculty advisor to all MA students until a thesis or thesis exhibition supervisor (first reader) is determined.

Students usually identify their thesis or thesis exhibition supervisor by the end of their second term in the program. In consultation with the supervisor, the student prepares a thesis proposal or thesis exhibition proposal.
