Clinical Psychology, PhD
A new federal law, effective July 1, 2020, mandates that educational programs leading to licensure provide information about whether completion of the educational requirements of their program will satisfy state licensure requirements. The table below lists whether the educational requirements of the UWM Clinical Psychology program (as of the 2019-20 academic year) meets the current educational requirements of each state licensure board. In addition to education requirements for the doctoral degree, however, many jurisdictions require post-doctoral professional experience. These requirements are beyond the curricular requirements described below. Thus, this list ONLY reflects whether the UWM degree requirements satisfy current licensure requirements in each state, and does NOT include postdoctoral requirements for each state.
For more information on licensing requirements, including contact information for every state and territory licensing board, please see the Association of State Boards of Professional Psychology (ASBPP) webpage [link]. All states require the completion of supervised predoctoral practicum hours and a predoctoral internship. These aspects are also required for the doctoral degree in clinical psychology at UWM.
Note that in some jurisdictions, in addition to being licensed as a psychologist, an individual can obtain prescribing privileges. UWM’s Clinical program does NOT fulfill requirements for licensure as prescribing psychologists in those states and jurisdictions that allow for it. Typically, additional coursework in pharmacology is needed in addition to the doctoral degree. Please see the ASBPP website for information about other U.S. territories and Canadian provinces.
Earning a doctoral degree from a program accredited by the American Psychological Association (APA) satisfies educational requirements for licensure. UWM’s Clinical Psychology doctoral program is currently and has been continuously accredited by APA since 1980.
