Footage of the Wisconsin earthquake relief effort in Managua. Part 2 includes two interviews with local military officials involved in the relief effort. The first speaks about public health concerns like the spread of typhoid in communities devastated by the earthquake and about the positive impact the food aid has had and will have with on-going support. The second addresses infrastructure as being completely demolished and how rebuilding efforts will require labor, resources and news developments to be planned outside of seismic areas.
The earthquake occurred on December 23, 1972, and through an international program started by President Kennedy in 1963, Wisconsin and Nicaragua were Sister states. The earthquake relief from Wisconsin referenced in this footage occurred in early January, after the first military cargo plane left Madison on January 2.
