Birth Parent Stories Videos

These two videos were created by the MCWP in conjunction with the Bureau of Milwaukee Child Welfare, Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin Community Services, and Integrated Family Services, for the purposes of training foster parents. Learning From Parents: What Foster Families Need to Know, is twenty minutes long and includes a panel discussion with birth parents. Child Welfare: A Mother’s Experience, is a five-minute interview with one birth parent.

Learning From Parents: What Foster Families Need to Know

Birth parents who have had their child/ren placed in out-of-home-care by the Bureau of Milwaukee Child Welfare provide insights into what it is like to have a child placed in a foster home. They candidly share their feelings about their children being placed, and the emotional challenges of visits. The parents also share their experiences with, and feelings about, working with foster parents, providing caregivers with an invaluable perspective about their roles. Foster parents who watch this video will come away with insights about birth parents’ experiences and feelings, as well as ideas for partnering with their foster children’s parents.

A birth parent who had her newborn infant placed in out-of-home care by the Bureau of Milwaukee Child Welfare shares her experiences with addiction, placement and developing a strong partnership with her son’s foster parents.
