Writing About Music is Like Dancing About Architecture

Architecture & Urban Planning (School of) / Architecture

Project Description

Writing About Music is Like Dancing About Architecture investigates the shift in practice that occurs when artists/designers train in another discipline. It asks student researchers: how has your making changed through learning as and collaborating with another discipline? Student researchers will answer this question through an inter-disciplinary rehearsal and art making process that will combine the disciplines of dance making and architecture and will result in an architectural sculpture work and dance installation. This work will be performed/presented as part of the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture (ACSA) conference hosted at UW-Milwaukee in the fall of 2018 as well as in-process showings through the UWM Departments of Dance and Architecture in the spring of 2018.

Tasks and Responsibilites

Students will attend weekly rehearsal and work sessions where they will bring their backgrounds as dancers- and architects-in-training to the work. They will be led through practices unique to each discipline by faculty advisors and will then work collaboratively to construct an architectural and dance installation piece as their final research product. They will also engage in ongoing reflection on their work together and will document their learning through in-process conversations and writings. Student researchers will determine in-process formats for receiving additional feedback from outside the working group. Finally, students
will reconvene in the fall of 2018 for presentation of the project at the fall 2018 ACSA conference hosted at UW-Milwaukee.
