South Korea’s Rise at the Intersection of Globalization and Deglobalization

Letters & Science (College of) / Political Science

Project Description

There is a vast volume of studies on globalization, particularly focusing on benefits and drawbacks of globalization. However, there are many signs of deglobalization appearing today because of the trade disputes between the US and China and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. A new “cold war” seems on the way, particularly in Northeast Asia. Korea developed its economy rapidly based on export-oriented industrialization. Globalization that brought global trade expansion facilitated Korea’s rise. However, as we noted, there are signs of deglobalization that will present challenges and difficulties to Korea’s future. Thus, in this project, we investigate how Korea can cope with the impending challenges in economic, public, cultural, and foreign policy areas. Thus far, few studies have explored how the forthcoming changes in the global politics will affect Korea and what the Korean government should do to cope with the challenges. Our studies will make important theoretical contributions to the literature.

Tasks and Responsibilites

: I am undertaking a book project on this subject for which the student will serve as a research assistant. Her responsibilities will include identifying and reviewing relevant scholarly literature as well as contemporary news sources. Through this work, the student will develop essential research skills, including effective source identification, evaluation, and synthesis. In addition, we will engage in substantive discussions about the project’s objectives, theoretical framework, and methodological approaches. These conversations will guide them in understanding how to formulate research questions, structure an academic argument, and produce a well-developed research paper. As a result, the student will gain practical experience in both the research process and academic writing.
