Project Description
The research project aims to understand the core brain mechanisms central to social cognition. A primary emphasis on the role of the entorhinal-hippocampal network. Specifically, the study investigates how disruptions in this circuit may manifest as social cognitive impairments in a mouse model of schizophrenia, the Df16 model. The overarching goal is to offer insights into potential therapeutic avenues for this disorder. Both wild-type and Df16 mice will undergo a series of behavioral tasks. At the same time, large-scale optical recording methods will monitor neuronal activity, offering an immediate insight into the processing of social information within the lateral entorhinal cortex, both under normal and pathological conditions. Additionally, electrophysiological measurements will explore potential circuit alterations specific to the Df16 mouse model within the entorhinal-hippocampal network. Participation in this project ensures that undergraduate interns benefit from a comprehensive experience spanning behavioral analytics, neural recording methodologies, and genetic insights.
Tasks and Responsibilites
Behavioral Analysis: Assist in setting up and conducting a series of behavioral tasks for both wild-type and Df16 mice. Document observations and analyze data.
Optical Recordings: Participate in viral injection, lens implant and baseplating surgeries. Setting up optical recording experiments. Monitor and document neuronal activity in real-time, as well as correlate neural activity with behavioral observations.
Electrophysiological Studies: Assist with the setup and implementation of electrophysiological measurements. Help analyze the data to identify potential circuit alterations in the Df16 mouse model.
Literature Review and Documentation: Conduct literature reviews to gather relevant background information, which will aid in understanding and interpreting research findings. Assist in documenting research findings, preparing reports, and potentially contributing to research papers or presentations.
Team Collaboration: Actively participate in team meetings and discussions, providing updates on tasks and findings. Collaborate with other team members to ensure that the research process is seamless and efficient.
