Project Description
The School of Architecture and Urban Planning is at an exciting moment of change as SARUP is launching a 5-year B.Arch degree program (the industry standard for an accredited professional undergraduate degree) as well as merging with the Peck School of the Arts this year. As such, a faculty-student working group has worked over the past year to re-work and redefine the future of the SARUP curriculum and pedagogy. We created the framework for an 8-semester implementation plan for new and modified courses to clarify the future of the school and tackle contemporary 21st-century challenges and questions for the discipline of architecture. A pair of faculty leads - Assistant Professors Lindsey Krug and Sam Schuermann - are spearheading the continuation of this work through Fall 2023, continuing their work with a group of students to facilitate the implementation and sharing of this research. With the help of student researchers, the goal is to bring the student body on board so there is transparency and clarity about their educational paths. The methodology of the next phase of research will involve holding student and faculty feedback sessions, as well as building out a website that holds a database/archive of this information.
Tasks and Responsibilites
Student tasks will include: finalizing and refining the results of the literature review that was completed over the summer 2023 term; leading student information and feedback sessions with peers, and creating an online database to store this info for future sharing with new SARUP students. There will also be some small design tasks along the way to help market this work and make it graphically accessible. It is essential that this work continue to be taken on by a group of students, rather than one or a select few, in order to successfully implement the changes over the coming two academic years. Not only is the scale of the project very large, but incorporating a wide range of voices is vital to the success of the project.
