Protoacoustic Range Verification – Phantom Development

Letters & Science (College of) / Physics

Project Description

The student will spend most of their time characterizing wave propagation around acoustic scatterers and then embedding appropriate scatterers into tissue mimicking material as s/he fabricates more sophisticated phantoms for use in protoacoustic range verification experiments.

Tasks and Responsibilites

The student will learn about propagation of very low frequency ultrasound, which are used clinically for tumor ablation during ultrasonic aspiration. The student will use my lab's V1 ultrasound system and a cardiac ultrasound array to observe distortion of plane waves generated by a fishfinder transducer as they propagate past bone-mimicking inserts in a waterbath.
