Project on Energy System

Engineering & Applied Science (College of) / Mechanical Engineering

Project Description

Through the US Department of Energy funding, the UWM Industrial Assessment Center (WM-IAC) provides energy, productivity, and waste assessments to small and medium-sized industrial facilities. The US-DOE Industrial Assessment Centers (IACs) can help small and medium-sized US manufacturers save energy, improve productivity, and reduce waste by providing no-cost technical assessments conducted by university-based engineering students and faculty teams. The UWM’s IAC conducts energy assessments for industries in Wisconsin by visiting plants and investigating energy usage. After the site visit, the IAC, the research group, provides a comprehensive report detailing all opportunities for improving competitiveness identified during the assessment, including applicable rebates and incentives. The work involves the analysis of energy usage, energy-saving plans, and consumption data throughout the year. The student will perform the calculations, survey the power usage, and measure the electric consumption rates for gas and electricity.

Tasks and Responsibilites

Their tasks are conducting energy, waste, and productivity assessments using instrumentation and diagnostic equipment, working safely in an industrial environment, and communicating successfully through written reports and client presentations. The student will join the pre-, on-site, and post-assessment meetings of the energy assessment visit, and perform the analysis. This will be followed by completing the full report and conducting the company's implementation survey. Also, the student will develop data-processing skills and engage in research for publications.
