Off-Spec Ash-Based Binders for Eco-Concrete

Engineering & Applied Science (College of) / Civil & Environmental Engineering

Project Description

This project provides a pathway for the use of off-spec coal combustion by-products such as spray dryer absorber ash (SDA), which can have higher hannebachite/sulfate levels, and pozzolanic ash from landfills and impoundments, for use as a combined supplementary cementitious material (SCM) for composite pavements. Here, the use of combined SCM has the potential to reduce the CO2 emissions associated with Portland cement by up to 50%.

Tasks and Responsibilites

The student will work as a research/project assistant and will be responsible for the design and lab work associated with the project. The student will also be responsible for the literature review, testing of concrete and cementitious materials, modeling, and the evaluation of test data, including mechanical and durability properties, materials characterization, and durability testing.
