Music for the Stars

Letters & Science (College of) / Physics

Project Description

There are two primary objectives in the “Music for the Stars” research project: improving the quality of music and audio used in the UWM Manfred Olson Planetarium (planetarium) programs or events, as well as providing the student with real-world experience and feedback in the creation of such commissioned works. The student – a declared Music Composition/Technology major - will apply both technical and non-technical skills that are central to their program: Music composition and production, audio processing and editing, use of audio technology (hardware and software), understanding how the programs are used and how audiences respond to them, and collaboration with another party to create works for a specific set of purposes.

Tasks and Responsibilites

The student will 1. Identify and address planetarium audio files that need to be improved: e.g., situations where different music files have different volumes, start and stop abruptly, or that don’t necessarily complement the content. The student will also compose new original music for the planetarium keeping in mind inclusion of all audience members.  2. Identify and address the areas where general audio-related practices at the planetarium can be improved. Once these plans have been approved by the mentor, the student will: 1. Assess existing audio (including non-musical clips) and make adjustments to these audio files to improve the quality of the planetarium shows:  mixing or remixing audio to better suit the space, ensuring smooth transitions between audio clips, and considering whether the music is welcoming to everyone.  2. Set up and maintain an organizational system (including a basic training outline) in which streamlined pieces are cataloged in an easy-to-understand way for future team members to maintain. 3. The student will compose music for specific functions: to help inspire an audience, provide a background for presenter commentary, or help entertain people during transitions. The student and the mentor will be mindful of making the music welcoming for everyone. 4. The student will give at least monthly updates during planetarium staff meetings.
