Monitoring Spring Phenology of Trees and Shrubs in Downer Woods

Letters & Science (College of) / Geography

Project Description

The objective of this research project is to determine if differences in the timing and duration of growth stages (phenology) of different vegetation categories exist in Downer Woods a fragment of temperate deciduous forest in an urban setting. The hypotheses we will test are (i) native shrubs will leaf out earlier than non-native shrubs and (ii) trees will be the last vegetation category to leaf out.

Tasks and Responsibilites

The student will use a standard protocol to observe and record the phenology of a suite of about 40 woody plants. They will visit Downer Woods twice weekly and collect data from each plant. They will then enter this data in an excel spread sheet for further analysis. The student will meet with me regularly to discuss progress and any issues that may occur.
