Mass Spectral Analysis of Potential Drug Molecules in Human Glioblastoma

Letters & Science (College of) / Chemistry & Biochemistry

Project Description

The objective of this study is to find an efficient treatment for the most aggressive and common brain tumors called glioblastoma.   Methodology:  The potential drug targets of glioblastoma will be characterized by liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). A method for absolute quantification of the drug molecules will be developed on a triple quadrupole mass spectrometer using multiple reaction monitoring MS. The developed method will be useful for the pharmacokinetic study as needed.

Tasks and Responsibilites

1. The student will work with a graduate student in Mirza lab. They will be trained on using mass spectrometers in the lab required for the assigned projects. A single quadrupole MS LCMS 2020 will be used for the qualitative assessment of the analytes. 2. Once proficient on LCMS 2020, they will be trained on LCMS 8040, a triple quadrupole MS for accurate quantitative assessment of the analytes. 3. They will be working with the graduate student in sample preparation techniques for MS analysis.
