Project Description
Our end goal is to produce an interactive website which makes spatial and temporal sense of the Shinsengumi, a group of bandits who were deputized by the shogun in the late 19th century to bring order to Kyoto. This website will be a companion to the novel Shinsengumi: keppuroku, which I have translated and am currently sharing with potential publishers.
Tasks and Responsibilites
Students will select and digitize maps of Kyoto and Japan in the late 19th century, learn how to geolocate those maps, and incorporate those maps into ARC-GIS story mapping software. We plan to build on these foundational skills to complete a story map of the Shinsengumi, which will be hosted on Ritsumeikan University's digital humanities website.
